Juice magazine (pools, pipes & punk rock)
In the skateboard magazine world these days it seems that less is more. Or maybe I’m just getting old and I could care less and less about seeing the next ‘factory mag’ (does that term exist already?) with another no name jumping a bigger set every months followed by various ads from his sponsors….
Right now my favorite skateboard mags would be Lowcard, Skatebook (a league on it’s own) and since recently Juice magazine.
A few months ago I walked into Powerplant Choppers where these guys where working on building customized Triumph and Harleys from scratch.
One of the guys working on the motorcycles there was Steve Olson. Not the Shorty’s dude from the 90s, but the OG ripper (and father of Girl pro Alex Olson). In between talking on the phone and greeting his friends that stopped by the shop he handed me a copy of Juice magazine, with Jason Jessee on the cover.
I flipped briefly through it and asked Steve if I could take it, and he said it was fine. Over the last few days I read the magazine back-to-back, and found out that Steve Olson did a lot of the interviews in there. Juice magazine (as well as Skatebook) only comes out 4 times a year, but that makes it way more interesting and definitely worth the wait!
In issue #64 Steve Olson interviews Deawon Song, Emmanual Guzman, Jasson Jessee, Max Schaaf, Lizard King and Heath Kirchart (among some others). The rest of the articles are interviews with some underground/old school skateboarders, a few big wave surfers and some bands. There is also an article about the 4th Pro-Tec pool party and one about Spectrum sk8parks, a company who builds concrete skateparks in Canada.
On one of the last pages there is also a small interview with Andy Benka, the director of market outreach for Harley-Davidson. He talks about the Wild Ride and how Heath Kirchart has been one of the inspirations for their new Dark Custom bike.
